Packed with Art

"Packed with Art" is a new event being co-organised by Fenland Visual Arts Collective members Richard Savage and Marian Savill. This unique arts and crafts event will take place at Savage Studios in Chatteris on Saturday, 3rd December from 11am til 3pm. All the artists/makers participating will be presenting their work in suitcases! Marian says, "We wanted to offer an unusual, fun event as an alternative to more traditional arts and crafts events. It's a great opportunity for participants to think creatively about their displays and be inventive with their presentation. It also affords artists and makers who have smaller scale production or lower stock levels the opportunity to sell." Richard added, "We'd like to offer a wide variety of arts and crafts and still have a few spaces left to fill."

Christmas Tree Festivals

We are planning to join in 2 Christmas Tree festivals again this year and would like to use ATC's for decorating them. The trees will be in the Churches of Chatteris and March. If you would like to join in then perhaps we could each do 2 or 3 cards and then when the trees are dismantled you get the same number back but not your own, this has proved popular in previous years. Please email Heather if you want to join in, for those who don't know about ATC's I have included the following from Wikipedia:

Artist Trading Cards (or ATCs) are miniature works of art about the same size as modern baseball cards,^[1] or 2 ½ X 3 ½ inches (63 mm X 89 mm),^[2] small enough to fit inside standard card-collector pockets, sleeves or sheets.^[3] The ATC movement developed out of the mail art movement and has its origins in Switzerland.^[4] Cards are produced in various media, including dry media (pencils, pens, markers, etc.), wet media (watercolor, acrylic paints, etc.), paper media (in the form of collage, papercuts, found objects, etc.) or even metals or cloth. Momentum Arts

Nancy Hogg from Momentum Arts in Cambridge is looking to recruit artists for the third year of this lottery funded programme. She would like to hear from emerging and mid career artists who are working in participatory settings.

Open Day at Whitemoor Yard

Sunday 14th August saw a great turnout for the official opening of the National Track Materials Recycling Centre. FenVAC were represented and hosted a display of artwork in the Marquee.

Adrian Sutterby, Chairman of Friends of March Railway Station, has been in touch to say:

"Just like to say a big thank you for all the volunteers that came out and supported this event yesterday. It has raised the group profile and has given us contact with a lot of corporate companies that may be able to help . There also a thank you for Dave Miller (Network Rail) and his team for inviting the group there and seeing what really goes on behind the scenes. Really enjoyed the day."

"I am hosting a Art/Photography Market at the Skoulding suite on Saturday 5th November 2011.

I want to emphasise this is not an Exhibition, I want to set it up similar to a craft fayre where framed pictures/photographs/prints are displayed on tables or in files to look at and purchase if wished, by all means if you want to have the display boards out as well, we can arrange this at a later date.

What I want to do for the minute is open it up to you all to attend if you wish and invite people from Fenvac or indeed anyone who you think would be interested.

Stand prices will be £15 for the day, I propose to open from 9.30am - 3.30pm.

If you would like me to forward a poster advertising please shout out - I will make one up. Otherwise please express your interest to me and I will email you a booking form."

"Octavia View which is located on the South Brink in Wisbech will be holding a craft fair, café, art exhibition and shop open to the public on Rose Fair Week between Wednesday 29th June and Saturday 2nd July. The craft fair will be held within our communal gardens on our large plaza. We are hoping to have as many local people or groups to hold stalls within our grounds. We already have some stallholders including locally made jewellery and glass paining. We would love to get as many local people or groups involved as possible. I write to you to see if you or any of your contacts would like to hold a stall with us. Stalls will be charged at £7.50 per day and we will provide tables and chairs for the stall holders. We also have toilets for all stallholders and general public to use. If you are interested please do not hesitate to contact me further."

Fen Edge Textiles are having their latest exhibition, Taking Liberties, at Art Van Go in Knebworth, opening today and running until 5th March. Jenny Furlong, Fenland Visual Arts Collective committee member, is exhibiting her fabulous work in the exhibition. There's a meet the artists day this coming Saturday, 12th February. Yesterday afternoon I changed the artwork in Panini's Cafe at March Town Hall.

There are four artists exhibiting their work this time and all of them are new to any of our loacl permanent exhibiting venues. :)

Audrey Quinton is exhibiting four delightful watercolours all depicting local scenes.

Alan Howard is exhibiting three larger watercolours of a variety of subjects.

Jo Jutsum is exhibiting five paintings - three acrylics, an oil and a watercolour & gouache, four with with a seaside theme and one still life of fruit.

Margaret Williams is exhibiting three enamel & acrylic paintings and a cameo carving of a dog's head.

Please do pop in and have a look at the artwork! If you'd like to exhibit work at Panini's or any of our other local venues, please do drop us an email. It's a great way to get your work seen and a chance to make sales.

Fenland Arts Association Artist in Residence 2012

Fenland Arts Association Artist in Residence

Fenland Arts Association is looking to appoint an Artist in Residence for the year April 2011-April2012. The person selected must live in the Fenland area and must have their own transport. They will be required to take part in and lead workshops and exhibitions throughout the region. The artist will need to be flexible as may be required daytime, evenings and weekends. In view of these requirements it is anticipated that the successful applicant will be a full time artist.

The artist will have, or be prepared to obtain, an enhanced CRB and will be required, at times, to work with children, the elderly and those with learning or physical difficulties. Fenland Arts is an Arts Award Centre and offers the Arts Award to all young people aged 11-25 who are involved in their projects. We would like the Artist in Residence to either be or become an Arts Award advisor to support this activity and training will be provided.

The successful artist will be promoted by Fenland Arts Association and will be able to use the appointment for their own promotional purposes. This is a voluntary appointment, however all sessional work will be paid at our standard sessional rate. Supported by Fenland Arts Association staff and Trustees we would also encourage the Artist in Residence to look for funding streams for relevant projects.

The artist will be guaranteed two exhibitions supported by Fenland Arts Association, the first at the beginning of the residency themed to the artist’s choice and the second towards the end of the term of residency which will have the Fenland Arts theme for 2011/12 which will be Challenging Arts.

Artists are asked to submit their cv and images of their work with a covering letter explaining why they would wish to be considered for this appointment and how they would fulfil the requirements of the post. Closing dates for applications is Friday 25th February 2011.

A DUDI Night!

Bryony Parkin, arts administrator for the Fenland Arts Association, is organising A DUDI NIGHT! to raise funds for a voluntary/educational trip to Malawi in Africa next year.

Bryony is a student at City College Norwich, studying Hospitality, Tourism and Leisure Management BA (HONS). For part of the degree, the students are invited to join the tutors in a 16 day voluntary/educational trip to

Malawi

, Africa in May/June 2011.

The trip takes the students to Dedza, and travels to the edge of the Malawi Lake towards the end of the stay, stopping at certain places along the way. The Students and tutors all take part in local activities and learn about the beliefs and ways of life from the locals. They will also volunteer whilst on the trip. This will consist of updating the Dedza website, which was specifically created by CCN in order to increase tourism in the area, helping locals with simple marketing techniques, training workshops, and giving basic advice from what we have learnt on the course so far.

The total cost of the trip is £1,700; this includes two full meals per day, all accommodation, insurance, and all travel expenses. Bryony says "

If I can raise enough money to cover this cost, it will open doors for my future goals, and will give me knowledge and understanding of how less developed countries work and live. The trip is a once in a life time opportunity and will enable me to share my skills and knowledge with the people who really need it."

Nene Valley Railway Art Day

A few of us ventured out to the Nene Valley Railway, north of Peterborough, yesterday in preparation for the forthcoming railway/train travel themed exhibition to be held at March Railway Station on Saturday, 11th December as part of their celebrations of the 125th anniversary of the opening of the platforms.

Although we were few in number we all had a great time. The trains were in steam and there was also the opportunity to explore parts that are usually off limits to the public as well as the chance to draw, paint and photograph the many engines, carriages, station buildings and huge variety of equipment on display. Everyone who attended agreed that it was a good day out and hopefully we all have some fodder for our work for the exhibition.

If you've never been along to one of our art days, please do consider it! They're always great fun!

Exhibition Opportunity

The Friends of March Railway Station are holding an event on Saturday, 11th December 2010 to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the opening of the platforms at the station and as part of the celebrations the Fenland Visual Arts Collective have been invited to organise an art exhibition of railway/train themed artwork.
Artwork for the exhibition can be in any media but no larger than 24" x 20" including frame. Work must be framed and ready to hang, no clip frames, please. There will be some limited space for 3D artwork, if you are interested in exhibiting 3D work please contact me with the dimensions of your work. There will also be a browser available for prints and table space for card sales etc. Please remember the artwork must have a railway/train theme. The event is only for the morning but we are looking to move the exhibition to another venue afterwards so it will get more exposure. If you would like to exhibit at the exhibition please contact me by Friday, 3rd December. More details to follow regarding delivery/collection of work.

As with all opportunities of this type it is the responsibility of the artist to arrange any insurance for the work that they wish. The Fenland Visual Arts Collective insurance only covers 3rd party public liability and neither the Fenland Visual Arts Collective nor the the Friends of March Railway Station will accept responsibility for any loss or damage to the work.

The Friends of March Railway Station are working on refurbishing the station buildings on what was the centre platform, the rooms will eventually all be opened for public use and include a small museum and a permanent gallery space. The event on 11th December will use the rooms (although they won't all be refurbished by then) and also includes lots of other attractions including March Brass Band, a steam train passing through, memorabilia and photographic displays, Fenland Light Railway and March Vintage Veteran Cycles. It is anticpated that the event will be very well attended.
In light of this exhibition opportunity we have arranged our next art day event to be at the Nene Valley Railway at Wansford, just north of Peterborough on Wednesday, 27th October. This will be an ideal opportunity for members to sketch, paint, photograph etc the trains, station and yards, we may be able to arrange access to areas not open to the public on the day but most areas are visible from the public areas. Members of the Fenland Visual Arts Collective will be welcomed free of charge and won't even have to pay for a platform ticket. There will be steam trains running on the day at 10.30, 12.30 and 2.30. There will be a charge if you wish go on the train rides. There is a very good cafe at the station with drinks, snacks and meals. There are also toilets and disabled access. As usual members are welcome to come along for as long or as short a time as they like. This event is during half term so bring the family and make a day of it! We need to advise staff of approximate numbers so please let me know by Friday, 8th October if you may be attending. I hope lots of you will be able to attend this fun creative day and I look forward to meeting you and seeing the subsequent artwork.

Our Nobby

The Cavell Centre is hosting the premiere performance of "Our Nobby", a play about the homeless gentleman that used to live in the bus shelter on Oundle Road Orton Longueville. Produced by Eastern Angles this 30 minute play takes a look at events can shape our lives.

On the same day, the Cavell Centre is also promoting the "Time to Change" campaign and "Heads Up" hair salon campaign - a regional promotion which has successfully engaged hundreds of hairdressers in a simple message: 'It's ok to talk about mental health'. It is backed by the national Time to Change campaign.

Official Opening of the Cavell Centre

The Cavell Centre was officially opened by the Countess of Wessex this week. Chair of Fenland Visual Arts Collective, Rob Morris, was there to capture the event. The Cavell Centre Gallery has a wide variety of artwork from artists across Cambridgeshire and is participating in the Peterborough Open Studios event. In the picture above, the Countess can be seen viewing some of Rob's work being exhibited at the Centre.

Fenland Visual Arts Collective chair, Rob Morris, is currently exhibiting some of his photographic images at March Library. The work is all monochrome. Rob says " I like the way that monochrome is timeless in it's appeal and allows the viewer to connect in a different way to how they would look at colour. The majority of images are limited edition prints and cover a range of subjects many of which would be suitable as Father's Day gifts." The exhibition runs until 19th June and is open during normal library opening hours. Please do try and support Rob by visiting the exhibition. Ukulele fever comes to Ely!

World renowned Tutor and Performer, Steven Sproat, www.stevensproat.com is to teach at the first of a series of workshops organised by Utime; the beginners workshop (adults 16+) will be on Sunday 21st March from 10.30am – 3.30pm at the Scout Hut, St John’s Road, Ely. Steven has written books on learning to play the ukulele and has also made a DVD.
STEVEN’S musical history began in the early 1970s when his father bought him a ukulele at age 10. A love of George Formby and a determination to play as well as him eventually had its impact and Steven was playing and singing in his native North East (Lanchester, Durham) in pubs and clubs.
It wasn’t until Steven began writing songs and taking up guitar in the early 1980s that things began happening and for a while the uke took a back seat (it wasn’t exactly hip in the ‘80s. A band was formed called School of Thought based in Gloucester and there followed a demo album called There’s more to life (1988) featuring Steven’s songs and their debut single on 7” vinyl called ‘Dance with me’(1989).
The Ukulele revival was gathering momentum thanks largely to various celebrities, TV adverts and The Ukulele Orchestra and a surprise phone call one day from celebrity TV comic Harry Hill in 2005 gave Steven the boost he needed with his music. In 2009 Steven collaborated with BBC Presenter Nicky Campbell and actor Mark Moraghan on their ‘Swing’ album ‘Moonlight’s back in Style’ (Linn Records). Steven plays on 3 tracks including ‘Through it all’, ‘Birds’, and ‘Many’s the time’. The latter song was featured on Steve Wright on Radio 2 recently.

Museum Art Day

Our next member's art day will be on Saturday, 27th March at March & District Museum, High Street, March, PE15 9JJ from 11am til 3pm. The museum has a wealth of material including Victorian room displays and domestic items, tools, railway memorabilia, archaelogical finds, photographs, militaria and much more. I was informed yesterday of the sad loss of a friend, and fellow artist, Chris Carr. I have known Chris and his family for quite a few years and I offer my deepest sympathy for his son, Noah, and lovely wife, Jo.
Chris was a highly talented artist whom I admired greatly, not only for his skill with an airbrush, but also for his generosity of spirit. His love of life made spending time with him and his family a joy. I mourn for the loss of a friend, taken from us so young and so suddenly. I will miss him and all the art work he had yet to share with us.

The Gables Open Studios

Skylark Cafe have agreed to display artwork from members of Fenvac on a continual basis with the work being changed (unless sold) every 3 months or so. There are spaces for about 12 pieces at the moment and the owners would like work suitable for the rural atmosphere of the cafe/garden centre/farm area. I would therefore suggest work depicting rural landscape scenes, plants and flowers etc.

As with all opportunities of this type it is the responsibility of the artist to arrange any insurance for the work that they wish. Fenvac insurance only covers 3rd party public liability and neither Fenvac nor Skylark will accept responsibility for any loss or damage to the work.

There is no commission to be paid on any sales and no hanging fees. It is advisable as this is a cafe area that all work be behind glass and must be properly strung for hanging. Clip frames are not acceptable.

The first hanging will be made in about a week so anyone wishing to take part should email me at robertwmorris@btopenworld.com with details and sizes of the artwork as soon as possible. The spaces will be shared out between those that reply by Friday 13 November.

We have two forthcoming art days that all members and their families are invited to:

On Saturday, 7th November we are having an art day at Meeks Cemetery, New Road, Chatteris from 11am til 2pm. Come along to this lovely cemetery with abundant wildlife to draw, paint, photograph etc. Everyone welcome for as little or as long a time as you prefer. Depending on weather, warm clothes and hot drinks advisable! ;o) The nearest postcode to the cemetery, for those of you who don't know Chatteris, is PE16 6EX.

As a little respite from the festive celebrations our chair, Rob Morris, is hosting an art day at his studio at Allens Yard, Chatteris, PE16 6LQ on Tuesday, 29th December from 11am onwards. Come along and do/show some art or just to chat, eat and socialise! ;o) Please bring along some food to contribute. Everyone welcome!

Over the Christmas lights switch on weekends of 27th - 29th November (Chatteris & March) and 5th/6th December (Wisbech) we have the opportunity to open our studios (or alternative venues) to exhibit our work and share what we do. It's a great opportunity to get our work seen and maybe make a few pre Christmas sales too!Participating members can open on either or both weekends, this may depend on your location. If you don't have a studio to open we do have two potential venues (one in Chatteris and one in March) where several artists could share the space. Printmaking Workshops

FenVAC member, Fiona Dodwell, is holding some printmaking workshops in Whittlesey over several forthcoming weekends. Here are all the details from Fiona:

I am holding Japanese woodblock printmaking workshops at my home in Whittlesey with professional woodblock printmaker and printmaking teacher Jude Lockie. Her work can be viewed at http://www.judithlockie.co.uk/. I have been on courses with her at Suffolk College and Gainsborough's House and can vouch for them being fun and inspiring. Woodblock printmaking is something that you do not need any special equipment for and it can be done on the kitchen table. It is highly portable as you do not need a press. Inks are water-based so easy to use (and wash off). A simple and effective way of making and reproducing your own art.

The workshops are run on a non-profit-making basis (any excess arising goes to providing free places or is donated to Amnesty International) and cost £60 per person for two full weekend days. Tools and inks are brought by Jude for use by participants, and inexpensive woodblocks and paper are sold at cost price. Everyone brings food to share at lunchtime; tea coffee, biccies and hot soup / rolls are provided.

FenVAC member, Carol Oldfield, is currently having an exhibition of her work at the Angles Theatre, Alexandra Road, Wisbech. It is her first solo exhibition and runs until 30th October. The work is displayed in the bar and can be viewed 10 - 6 Monday to Friday and 10 - 12 Saturday plus any time they have a show on. Carol invites FenVAC members to join her for the opening reception on the evening of Sunday, 11th October from 6pm til 8pm with wine & nibbles. After the meeting guest speaker, Dan Horn, Head of Housing and Neighbourhood Services from Fenland District Council, will give a presentation on the Neighbourhood Engagement Strategy being introduced in fenland.

Rob Morris and Marian Savill are continuing their series of local exhibitions with one entitled 'Cos Dads are Special starting on Monday. The exhibition is at March Library, City Road, March and runs until Saturday, 20th June during normal library opening hours. There will be a variety of unique work on display including assemblage, photography and jewellery in celebration of Fathers Day. Rob and Marian will be at the library on Tuesday, 9th June from 6.30pm - 8.30pm and everyone is welcome to go along to meet them, have a chat, see their work and enjoy light refreshments.

Fen Edge Textiles Exhibition

FenVAC committee member, Jenny Furlong, is part of the Fen Edge Textiles group who are having an exhibition at the National Trust property, Sutton Hoo, in Suffolk during June. The exhibition runs from 6th June to 21st June 2009 from 10.30am to 5pm, closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Much of the textile work is based on artefacts found at Sutton Hoo. If Jenny's glorious work (see below for one of her previous pieces) is anything to go by the exhibition is well worth a visit! ;o)

It has been suggested recently that FenVAC members could help each other out in many ways and I believe this is a great idea. ;o) Our membership is comprised of all manner of folk with a huge variety of different skills/talents and in these times of economic recession helping each other out seems a beneficial thing to do.

To start the ball rolling, Rob Morris is offering FenVAC members a 10% discount on any photographic requirements. Rob has recently taken the plunge and is now working full time as a photographer/visual artist. He works on a huge variety of projects from portraits, weddings and other celebratory events through to magazine work, charity projects and visual art for regular exhibitions.

The event is part of the Norfolk and Norwich Festival and features over 250 participating venues with individual artists as well as galleries/collectives of artists. Manea Gala

Apple Festival Exhibition

The recent Apple Festival exhibition which FenVAC held in conjunction with the Wisbech Art Club was very successful. Sixteen artists contributed 43 pieces of artwork in a variety of media. The exhibit was at Wisbech Castle's Pump Room for two days and attracted 230 visitors, lots of positive comments and interesting discussion. We then decamped to the Reed Barn at Peckover House for four more days. Visitor numbers were less at the Reed Barn but it was still a worthwhile event. I am in the process of updating the folder FenVAC has at Panini's Cafe at March Town Hall which holds information about members and their work. I have contacted members who already had information in the file regarding updating it but there's plenty of space! The folder is A4 sized with pockets to slip pages into. Creative MINDs Art Exhibition

The MIND Art Group, with support from Fenland Arts and Roddons Housing Association, are holding an art exhibition at March Town Hall, Market Place, March, PE15 9JF next Friday, 10th October. All the work will be for sale with the proceeds going to support the MIND Art Group. Visitors are welcome from 12.30pm until 4pm. Your support of this worthwhile art event would be much appreciated.

Artwork in Panini's

We will shortly be re-hanging the artwork in Panini's Cafe in March Town Hall so if you would like to hang some of your work there please do contact Marian or Carol. The artwork should be suitably framed and ready to hang. We have a variety of hanging spaces but can't accomodate anything too large. We also require your name and contact details along with details of the artwork (title, media and price). Any artwork is welcome but please remember that Panini's is a cafe so if you work with absorbant materials and are concerned about your work being in proximity to cooking smells this may not be a suitable venue for you!

Individuality Reclaimed Exhibition

On behalf of all the members of Fenvac I would like to congratulate Marian on her first jewellery exhibition, Individuality Reclaimed, at March Library. The people who attended the preview evening yesterday (Tuesday) were not only treated to a very special exhibition of unique hand crafted jewellery and refreshments but also a thank you gift made in Marian's very special style of art. I, and I am sure others, will treasure this thoughtful gift.

The exhibition will run until Saturday 4th October, during library opening hours, and I would urge you, and your family and friends, to call in and see this splendid exhibition for yourselves.

FenVAC Get Together

On Sunday, 21st September Rob is hosting a get together for FenVAC members at his studio in Chatteris from 10am - 6pm. This is an opportunity to come along and meet other artists, bring your work along to share and/or work on, meet your committee and generally have a nice sociable time together. Tea and coffee will be provided and please feel free to bring along some food if you'd like to. Stay as long or as short a time as you'd like to! Rob's studio is the white building as you enter Allen's Yard, off the junction with East Park Street and Wenny Road. Contact Rob for more details.

Apple Day

FenVAC have been invited to hold an exhibition of apple themed artwork as part of the Wisbech Apple Day celebrations on Friday, 17th and Saturday, 18th October 2008. The exhibition will be in Wisbech Castle's Pump Room and we are very pleased to be joining forces with the Wisbech Art Club for the occasion.

To join in the exhibition all you have to do is come along to Willock Farm Orchard, Rummers Lane, Wisbech St Mary on one of our pre arranged art days to sketch, paint, photograph etc the apples, trees, orchard, sheep or any other aspect of the orchard that interests you. The dates are Thursday, 18th, Saturday, 20th and Sunday 21st September. The resulting artwork will then form the exhibtion at the Pump Room in October. The orchard is open to the public everyday so if you cannot make any of these dates you could go along independently alhough we may well be organising some more dates and it would be good to meet with fellow artists on these dates. The orchard are having an Open Day on the 20th so there will be more people visiting and more happening on that date. Mr Wheatley who owns the orchard is happy for artists to be about doing their thing as part of the event so if any members can go along that day it would be great. After the Apple Day celebrations the exhibition will be going on to the Reed Barn at Peckover House so another opportunity to get your work seen! I hope lots of members will take this opportunity to exhibit in Wisbech and help support and promote this great event.

Cemetery Art Day

For those of you who couldn't make it to the recent art day at Leverington Road Cemetery in Wisbech I thought I'd post some photographs of our time there. All the photos are courtesy of Eleanor Savill.

We were really lucky with the weather, we had sunshine and cloud most of the day with just a little shower or two late on!

Fenland Council for Voluntary Service AGM

FenVAC is a member of FCVS so all members are invited to go along to their AGM which will be held on Tuesday, 16th September 2008 at 10.00am at The Skoulding Suite, March Town Hall, Market Place, March, PE15 9JF. The guest speaker will be Richard Dedman, Director of Bruch & Co Ltd, who will give a short presentation on recent legislative changes and their impact on charities and charitable companies.
